Why Moving to a New Country Can Feel Harder on Your Mind Than You Expected

Moving to a new country is not just about changing where we live. In a short period of time, we have to deal with a foreign language, a different culture, unfamiliar rules, being away from family and friends, and sometimes a strong feeling of loneliness. That is why, even if we thought from the very beginning that moving abroad would be easy, after a while we may start feeling tired, anxious, unmotivated, or even experience homesickness.
These feelings do not necessarily mean that moving abroad was the wrong decision. Our minds need time to adjust to a completely new environment, and that time is different for everyone. Of course, some people may find it very difficult to adapt to these circumstances, or may never fully feel comfortable with them.
To make this period a little easier, these five things can help:
Don’t expect yourself to adapt quickly
We are not supposed to feel completely comfortable with the new language, culture, and lifestyle from day one. Give yourself time and notice the small steps you are making.
Build new connections
Even one or two healthy relationships, especially with local people, can help reduce feelings of loneliness. Make a real effort to join language classes, social groups, sports activities, or local communities.
Stay connected to your culture and roots
Food, music, language, friends, and cultural traditions can give us a sense of familiarity and security. We don't have to leave our past behind in order to embrace our new life.
Keep a simple and active daily routine
Regular sleep, some exercise, healthy food, and having a clear time for work and rest can help our minds feel stable again. During the process of moving abroad, these simple habits can make a real difference.
Talk about your feelings
Sometimes, talking to a trusted friend is enough. But if feelings of anxiety, loneliness, or sadness continue for a long time and start affecting your daily life, speaking with a psychologist or counsellor can become necessary.
Let’s keep in mind that moving to a new country is a long process, not something that happens overnight. It can take time before a new country truly starts to feel like home.
Be patient with yourself. And if you feel that you need support along the way, don't hesitate to seek professional help.
